/ Noice
A noise-resilient conversation solution
My Role
Concept, Research, UI/UX Design, Visual design and Interaction design
Description
Noice is an invention designed to enable users to conduct group conversations in noisy environments without being distracted by sound overwhelm.
/ Problem
Sound overwhelm occurs in various settings, such as open-plan offices, public transportation, or even at home. Negative consequences often include increased stress, reduced focus, and decreased well-being.
Our analysis revealed that conversations in noisy environments pose a significant challenge, both in personal and professional settings.
How can we connect people to each other in noisy environments?
/ Concept
To develop a final concept, we delved deep into the problem, using insights to create the perfect product for our users. How can we connect people to each other so they can converse effectively in noisy environments without completely ignoring their surroundings? The solution ultimately came from Peer-to-Peer technology combined with Machine Learning and Active Noise Cancelling, aimed at regulating ambient noise.
To make these technologies and their resulting features accessible to our users, we developed headphones through which users can connect using Peer-to-Peer technology. This creates what we call a »Shared Sound Bubble.« The headphones feature Active Noise Cancelling and capture ambient sounds, which can be controlled through an app. For recurring meetings, there's even the option to save »Bubbles« and the ambient noise settings.

User Journey
How can a listening
experience be designed?
/ Application
The final application initially includes a login area, which is necessary for later saving members in group conversations.
After logging in, the user is informed about the interaction possibilities with the headphones.

Connect within and save a sound bubble
On the first screen, you will find the key features of the application, such as adjusting the volume both inside and outside the Sound Bubble, as well as the ability to save Sound Bubbles and listening modes.
Configure the listening experience

Two group partners are linked through a long-press on smart headphones.

Saving the sound bubble to reuse conversation content later.
To save location-specific settings, it is possible to create a 'Listening Mode'. This configuration is done in the second navigation tab, »Hörmodus«.
Here, sounds are recorded and categorized through machine learning. Users then have the option to adjust the volume individually within categories. In addition to this adjustment, users can also specify a location.
Save the content of the conversation
Here, additional group members can be added, or content from group conversations can be accessed. This menu section offers ample room for many more ideas and possibilities to enhance group conversations.
This setting allows for automatic connection to the previously created listening mode when in familiar places. Under the »Bubbles« navigation tab, you will find the saved Sound Bubbles displayed.
/ Smart Headphones
Our final smart headphones are equipped with Peer-to-Peer technology, enabling all participants in group conversations to contribute and receive content from other group members.
Simultaneously, the integrated selective noise cancellation feature allows users to control ambient sounds through the app, immersing them in a personalized sound zone.
In our design, we prioritize comfort and stability. The interaction area is situated outside the ear, allowing users to join, leave, add participants, or decline requests in group conversations, all through a dedicated button.

/ Light Feedback
An integrated light feedback on the headphones indicates to individuals outside the group whether participant requests are welcome by illuminating as needed.
